In 1922, Jim Abercrombie and Harry Cameron designed the world’s first blowout preventer (BOP) in the dust of the floor of their shop in Houston, Texas. The new invention revolutionized the fledgling drilling industry. Soon, BOPs manufactured by Cameron were being used throughout Texas and far away as Mexico and Venezuela.
In 1927, Abercrombie and Cameron went on to develop a BOP with rams that could be closed with steam or water pressure. And the firsts just kept coming. Cameron Iron Works later introduced BOPs with larger bore sizes and higher pressure ratings. In 1962, Cameron became the first company capable of designing and delivering a complete underwater drilling system. And in 1988, Cameron set a record for the delivery of sophisticated subsea BOP stack systems and electro-hydraulic multiplex (EH MUX) drilling controls systems.
In the same way Cameron's technology led the drilling industry, the company also became prominent in the land and subsea production arena. Cameron designed and delivered surface wellheads and Christmas trees, and in the early 1960s, pioneered subsea production.
As the subsea market developed, Cameron was once again at the forefront of innovation. It developed the first 15K production system, the first EH MUX control system, and the first all-electric production system. In 1993, Cameron introduced the SpoolTree horizontal production system—an innovation that has been adopted as the industry standard for horizontal subsea production.
During its history, Cameron has acquired and integrated many oilfield pioneers into its business, including W-K-M, Thornhill Craver, McEvoy, Demco, Ingram Cactus Corporation, NATCO, LeTourneau Technologies’ Drilling Systems and Offshore Production divisions, TTS Energy Division's drilling equipment business, Douglas Chero Spa, and others. These acquisitions have extended the scope of Cameron offerings to incorporate valves for upstream, midstream, and downstream applications; treatment and disposal systems for gas, oil, produced water, seawater, and solids; and state-of-the art measurement systems for a variety of industries.
Today, Cameron is part of Schlumberger Limited, delivering a comprehensive portfolio of "pore-to-pipeline" products and services to the global oil and gas industry. The company that began with a rough sketch on a dirt floor now leads the way in surface, drilling, processing, and flow control technologies, ushering a new era of oilfield innovation.
1922: First Blowout Preventer Designed
Jim Abercrombie and Harry Cameron designed the world’s first blowout preventer (BOP), which was used to contain well blowouts, revolutionizing the industry with new standards for safety and well control that are still used today.
1927: Steam Preventer Developed
Abercrombie and Cameron went on to develop a BOP with rams that could be closed with steam or water pressure, selling 70 units in just two months.
1933: Expanding Gate Valve Introduced
A through-conduit expanding gate valve for use in high-pressure oil and gas wells was introduced.
1935: SDA BOP Introduced
Cameron introduced the SDA BOP, reducing BOP size, but not the capacity.
1941, 1942: Cameron Joins the War Effort
Cameron produced products for the US Navy, including 20-mm gun mounts, Tiny Tim rockets, and K-gun anti-submarine weapons.
1945: 10K Christmas Tree Developed
Cameron pioneered the industry's first 10K Christmas tree.
1952: Type A Casing Hanger Introduced
Cameron introduced the Type A casing hanger, which allowed tubing to be set while BOP stacks were in place.
1956: Underwater Drilling and Completion Began
Cameron began work on a remote underwater drilling and completion (RUDAC) system for use in the Gulf of Mexico by a major oil company.
1960: Fully Welded Ball Valve Introduced
Cameron's fully welded body ball valve was introduced. Today, this particular ball valve is considered the industry standard and is one of the world's most popular ball valves for pipeline applications.
1962: First Subsea Wellhead Completion Installed
Cameron installed the industry's first subsea wellhead completion in the Gulf of Mexico, which helped set the pace for further subsea development.
1963: U BOP Introduced
Cameron introduced the U™ BOP, which eventually became the industry's standard ram-type BOP for land and sea.
1968: Hydraulic Control System Installed
Cameron installed the industry's first direct hydraulic drilling control system, which set the standard for controlling valves and chokes with hydraulic pressure.
1974: Drilling System Introduced for 6000-ft Water Depths
Cameron introduced a drilling system for use in water depths to 6000 ft (1829 m).
1975: First Subsea Choke Manufactured
Cameron manufactured and delivered the first subsea choke for use in the Mobil West Delta project in the Gulf of Mexico.
1976: First Multiplex Control System Created
Cameron created another industry first with the electro-hydraulic multiplex (EH MUX) production control system, designed to provide quicker response times as rigs moved to deeper water depths.
1983: T BOP Introduced
Cameron introduced the T BOP, featuring a revolutionary side ram-change that saved space and enhanced safety.
1988: First Freestanding Riser Installed
Cameron installed the first freestanding riser in the Gulf of Mexico.
1993: TL BOP Developed
The T BOP was replaced by the TL™ BOP. A lightweight version of the T BOP, the TL BOP was much more economical to manufacture and use.
1993: SpoolTree Production System Installed
Cameron installed the first deepwater SpoolTree™ production system in 2150-ft (655-m) water depth in the Gulf of Mexico.
2001: Early Production Systems Developed
Cameron developed an early production system for the Ceiba field offshore Equatorial Guinea, which set a field development record by reaching first oil after discovery in only 14 months.
2010: World's First 25K BOP Sold
Cameron received order for world’s first 13-5/8” 25,000-psi BOP stack.
2013: One Comprehensive Resource for Integrated Subsea Solutions
2016: Cameron Acquired by SchlumbergerCameron merges with Schlumberger Limited, building on the success of OneSubsea and launching a new era of complete drilling and production system performance.
