The BOP condition-based monitoring system is a network of sensors, data recorders, and communication systems on the rig that provides critical information for real-time monitoring and condition-based maintenance of the BOP and related pressure control equipment. The system can incorporate a wide range of sensors. Four different paths for data transmission provide redundancy, minimizing the risk of loss of data. Data is also stored for later recovery.
BOP condition data is acquired and analyzed, providing drillers new information that can be useful in planning and conducting maintenance to reduce unplanned downtime. The rich new set of data and technologies for transmitting it from subsea to surface and offshore to onshore also provide vital information for identifying and responding to well control emergencies in a timely manner.
- A data historian connects to the BOP control system to capture and compress high-resolution data into SQL format and transmit this data to a centralized location where it can be queried and analyzed for trends. The data historian also enables remote, real-time monitoring of the human-machine interface (HMI) screens on the rig from any location with internet access.
- Sensors acquire data from the BOP, ranging from conventional hydraulic fluid pressure and flow rate and wellbore pressure and temperature to ram position, hydraulic fluid condition, solenoid performance, and connector unlatch pressures.
- For offshore applications, inductive connections can robustly and reliably transfer data and power throughout the system, even if the main umbilicals experience failure.
